Hot Yoga Vs. Hot Vinyasa
At Hot House Yoga we offer two styles of yoga. What is the difference?

Hot Yoga is a specific style of Hatha Yoga that originated from a lineage in Calcutta, India. It’s important to note that the word “Hot” in Hot Yoga is a noun, not an adjective, meaning that you can’t just turn up the heat in a room and do any style of yoga and call it Hot Yoga.  Hot Yoga includes a distinct and therapeutic sequence of postures practiced in a heated room.  (check out Why The Heat?) It is considered a stationary sequence, meaning you come back to a stationary standing posture (Mountain Pose) between other postures.  The stationary quality of this style lends itself to being accessible to beginners as well as advanced students.  The focus is on building a solid foundation and understanding of the principles of body alignment. A consistent practice brings vital balance and restores all systems to optimal health.

Hot Vinyasa translates as linking or connecting. Vinyasa Yoga or “Flow Yoga” is a class of continuous movement where you transition, or flow, from posture to posture, synchronizing the breath with every movement. Essentially the breath dictates the movement and the length of time held in the postures. Hot Vinyasa, like Hot Yoga, is taught with a therapeutic vision to the sequencing of the postures. The class builds in succession, one posture preparing or warming up the body for the next posture. There are six pinnacle postures that are achieved in the Hot Vinyasa sequence. The Vinyasa flow is defined by the Sun Salutation, a series of six poses that creates the foundation of the class. The continuous movement of Hot Vinyasa makes this style more aerobic and therefore more physically challenging than Hot Yoga. This class deepens the foundation and principles of alignment taught in the Hot Yoga sequence. Beginners are encouraged to start with the Hot Yoga Sequence before trying Hot Vinyasa classes.
